Four foolproof ways to recover from midterm burnout

It’s that time of the year; semester two’s grace period is officially over (far too quickly, I must add). Mid-terms have come and gone, but the feeling of dread still lingers in the air. Falling into a mid-semester slump is so easy and valid when it seems like you have no time to do anything other than eat, sleep, uni work repeat. It’s hard out here, so let me provide you with my favourite (and cheap) ways to decompress and beat that midterm burnout whilst studying in Edinburgh.

Get those steps in:

First of all, let’s talk about the easiest way to relieve academic pressure. Walking is scientifically proven to reduce stress and clear the mind, and it’s super accessible in a city like Edinburgh. It can be slotted into your academic schedule with ease; substitute the bus to campus for a brisk walk, and it’ll work wonders. Let’s be honest, the bus probably takes longer to reach your destination anyway, especially if you are travelling over North Bridge. Leisurely walking has become one of my favourite hobbies, and discovering gems in the city never gets old. Currently, Dean Village and the Royal Botanic Gardens are providing the scenic vibes for me. So grab a friend, or go solo and allow Mother Nature to assist in your midterm stress relief.

Cheap and cheerful activities:

If you’re not inclined to set off on foot or the weather is not cooperating (highly likely), there is an abundance of sheltered activities to do at little to no cost. If you are looking for a completely free and educational activity, the National Museum of Scotland is the place to go. Central to Edinburgh, the museum has an array of rooms you can wander through and be transported back in time. If museums aren’t your thing, I strongly recommend watching a film at the cinema to immerse yourself in a visual experience. My favourite cinema in the city is the Everyman located in the St.James Quarter, who also provide a cheeky student discount.

I watched Babygirl this night…I won’t comment further

Change up that study scenery:

When you are feeling unproductive when completing assignments, a change of scenery might be the golden ticket to success. I find that when I’m trying to focus, being in the flat does me no favours as there are far too many distractions. My best life hack for increasing motivation whilst attacking midterms is to switch it up and haunt the main library or even a coffee shop like Mayvn on George Street, which is completely computer friendly. You’d be amazed at the difference it makes.

Meet some furry friends:

I know when I’m feeling overwhelmed with uni work I crave going home to spend time with my family, especially my cat. However, sometimes it’s not that easy and for those whose home is further from the city, animal interactions can be harder to attain. Evidence suggests that spending time with animals significantly helps with anxiety and stress, so what better way to meet furry faces than at Maison De Moggy cat cafe? I can confirm this is still one of the most enjoyable activities I have done in the city.  I might be a biased cat lover, but you need to trust me on this.

Midterms come and go, but the serotonin a cat cafe gives you lasts forever
