George Lebese rejected R230k monthly salary from Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese has revealed how much the Soweto giants offered him to stay.

In an interview with Robert Marawa on Radio 947, Lebese said Chiefs had tabled a monthly salary of R230 000 for him to sign a contract renewal in 2017.

At the time, Lebese was no longer a regular at Chiefs as he had lost his place to Edmore Chirambadare.

Chirambadare was Steve Komphela’s preferred left-winger, and Lebese said he felt that he was not going to play.

And for that reason, the now 36-year-old moved to Mamelodi Sundowns although they had offered him far less than what Chiefs intended to pay him.

To this day, Lebese regrets his decision to dump Chiefs for Sundowns where his career took a nosedive and faded in front of eyes.

Upon his arrival at Sundowns, Lebese featured regularly but he soon fell down the pecking order.

He was later loaned out to SuperSport United for six months, and that literally marked the end of his time with Sundowns.

“Chiefs offered me more; it was not about the contract,” said Lebese as per FARPost.

“It had to do with playing time and my relationship then with the coach. I could see I was not going to play.”

“I don’t know the exact numbers, but it was around R230 000 a month…around those numbers. That was more than what Sundowns was offering, and I said, ‘no’,” added Lebese.

WAS IT A FAIR DEAL?
