GOOD news for increased SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025

Increases to SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025 were finally confirmed in the revised Budget Speech this week. The Finance Minister went so far as to mention the R30-per-month increase to South African Social Security Agency Child Support grant out loud. No wonder, when you realise that more than 13-million parental beneficiaries with young children rely on this grant. This makes it the most expensive grant in the country fiscally.

However, SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025 are more than just Child Support. They also encompass Care Dependency and Foster Child. The latest budget commits R8.2 billion to social grants in the next three years to help cushion the blow of a 0.5% VAT increase. While still unconfirmed, we suspect SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025 will be disbursed on Thursday 3 April 2025 (awaiting confirmation). So, let’s get into how much each childcare stipend has increased by …

It’s finally some good news for needy families with children. Image: File

Firstly, SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025 will see Child Support increase by R30 to R560. Like disability for under-18s, SASSA Care Dependency increases by R130 and therefore pay R2 310. Meanwhile, SASSA Foster Child increases to R1 250. The increases range from 5.7% to 5.9% and, therefore, best current inflation.

If you’re looking for financial assistance from government for your child, here’s what you need to think about before applying. Firstly, only one parent (if married) per child (under the age of 18) may apply for a grant. A newborn added to the grant scheme as soon as possible after birth will receive approximately R145 480 in SASSA grants all the way to their 18th birthday. Note that this factors a conservative annual grant increases of roughly 5.5% per annum. Better still, the agency wants to see more young parents with newborns applying for SASSA Child Support benefits.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?

Firstly, you must register your newborn with the Department of Home Affairs as soon as possible.

Then you must pass the following means tests for each:

  • Earn less than R8 800 per month if you’re married (R105 600 annually).
  • Earn less than R4 400 per month if you’re single (R52 800 annually).

Applications can take up to three months to be processed, however, you will be backpaid funds to the date of your application.

After receiving an ID document for your child from Home Affairs, visit the SASSA service portal. Follow the prompts and make an appointment online.

Then visit the SASSA branch in-person and bring the following documents along with you:

  • Official birth certificate and ID of your child.
  • Valid identity documents of both the applicant (child) and spouse (if married).
  • Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
  • Proof of income (you and your spouse).
  • Approved three-month bank statement (no older than three-months).
  • Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).

Mentally or physically disabled children and foster children also get government support. They require additional paperwork from a government-appointed doctor. And only a court-appointed foster parent may apply for a Foster Child grant.

Grant beneficiaries have been very poorly treated so far in 2025, regarding the chaotic SASSA/Postbank card migration. Millions of affected SASSA beneficiaries have to have their cards successfully transferred before next week’s deadline on Thursday 20 March 2025.

However, even though the old gold cards will stop functioning, your SASSA Childcare Grants in April 2025 will not be jeopardised. SASSA and Postbank confirmed that beneficiaries can make alternative arrangements to withdraw SASSA grants at any SA Post Office branch around the country.
