Holika Dahan is an ancient Hindu festival, also known as the festival of colors. In the scriptures, it is considered a symbol of unity and victory of good over evil. This time the festival of Holi will start with Holika Dahan on 13 March 2025 and Dhulendi will be played on 14 March 2025. And the enthusiasm of this festival is seen not only in India but all over the world. Holi gives us the message of love, harmony and brotherhood.
Holi symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The main story associated with this festival is of Bhakta Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap, who considered himself a god, was enraged by his son Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu. He made several attempts to kill Prahlad, but failed every time. Ultimately, he took the help of his sister Holika, who was blessed with the boon of not getting burnt by fire. She sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap, but by the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad was saved and Holika was burnt to ashes. Holika Dahan is performed in memory of this incident.
According to religious beliefs, those who are newly married and it is their first Holi in their in-laws’ house, then the newly married bride should not see the first Holi of her in-laws’ house and should not participate in the puja either. Therefore, many families send the newly married bride to her parents’ house before Holi.
On this day, all the old grievances are resolved and people celebrate this affectionate festival by embracing each other. People forget every resentment and apply color-gulal to each other and get drenched in the color of love. Colors were used in the festival of Holi much later. In ancient times, Holi was played with dust. Shri Hari had done Dhuli Vandan at the beginning of Treta Yuga. Dhuli Vandan means people apply dust on each other, hence it is called Dhulendi.
The festival of Holi is also known as Dhulandi and Dhulendi. The practice of applying colors on Holi started from the time of Lord Shri Krishna and Radha Rani. Holi is known by different names in different parts of the country such as Fagua, Hori, Dhulendi, Dol, Dhulivandan etc.
