It’s coming up to Valentine’s weekend, which means you’ll be spending time with your loved ones. If you would rather this happen outside of rainy Wales, we decided to put together some of the cheapest flights out of Cardiff this week.
With Cardiff Airport being close to the city centre, it’s so easy to hop on a quick flight. Whether you choose to drive the 30 minutes to the airport or take the cheap direct train from Cardiff Central to Rhoose Cardiff International, it’ll take no time at all. Plus, it’ll be worth it for the break you and your partner will get from the stressful and busy university life. Change your setting from the ASSL to a vibrant city or beach; trust me, it’ll be worth it.
No matter if you’re more of a city explorer or a beach lover, here are four budget direct return flights from Cardiff (and one from Bristol) on Valentine’s weekend. Don’t worry, they’ll leave you with enough money to try all the local food – and drink, of course.
However, if none of these tickle your fancy, Bristol Airport offers cheap flights to many more destinations, which may be worth the longer train, and bus ride, to get to.
Belfast
Starting strong with Northern Ireland’s capital, Belfast.
Flights this weekend will cost you for a £280 return trip. This is one of the more expensive destinations to get to, but, if you’re looking for somewhere with cheaper beer than Dublin, this is the place to go. With the average price of a pint at £5.50 (not as cheap as Madri Mondays at The Taf, we know), it is much less than the average price of almost £8 in Dublin.
If you’re into your history, head to the Titanic Belfast or the Ulster Museum, where you can have a romantic walk around the botanical gardens after. At night, head to the Cathedral Quarter for its vibrant nightlife.

Next we have the Netherlands, the land of bikes, Dutch clogs and a whole lot of cafes (if you know, you know).
With KLM airlines, you can grab a return flight for around £172 on any day of Valentine’s week. Flight times average at about only one hour and 20 minutes from Cardiff, so, it’ll take no time at all.
You can walk, or even cruise, along the canal, visit the Anne Frank Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. If you and your partner feel brave, stroll along the red light district and look (or don’t look) at the “sights”.
Tenerife

If you’re hoping for some winter sun, why not head to the Canary Islands? With highs of 22 degrees, you might have the chance to get a tan on the beach.
Why not consider travelling from Bristol? You could do a long weekend trip on the island for only £168 return with Jet2. Plenty of money left for some tapas, and sun cream, even with the price of it these days.
In Tenerife you and your SO could chill on the beach together, have a cocktail and hit some bars in the evening. It sounds like the perfect way to spend Valentine’s weekend.
Dublin
One of the most popular day or weekend trips is to the capital of the Republic of Ireland. Ryanair’s direct flights from Cardiff will get you there in one hour, with the cheapest being £150 return trip from the 14th to the 16th, perfect for a weekend stay.
Head to Temple Bar for a Guinness (if the budget allows), or if you want to see how it’s made, check out the Guinness Storehouse. Delve into Dublin’s dark past with a haunted history tour. Hear the stories about torture and cannibalism, if that’s the sort of activity you’d like to do for Valentine’s (we’re not judging).
Although these flights all seem a little pricey, remember Valentine’s weekend is going to be a busy one, so prices will be higher wherever you go. But if you’re willing to treat yourself and your partner for Valentine’s, the price is worth it.
If your budget is extra tight, it might be worth making the extra effort to fly from Bristol Airport, where you’ll get more destinations and cheaper prices.
