Hollywood Icons Unite Urging Trump to Safeguard Creative Rights from AI

More than 400 Hollywood creatives, including actors, directors, and musicians such as Ben Stiller, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, and Paul McCartney, have signed an open letter urging the Trump administration to uphold copyright protections against artificial intelligence (AI).

The letter was submitted to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in response to the administration’s U.S. AI Action Plan, which seeks to advance America’s position in AI innovation.

The artists argue that tech companies like Google and OpenAI are pushing to weaken copyright laws to train their AI models on copyrighted materials without obtaining permission or compensating rights holders.

They warn that such changes could undermine the U.S. creative economy, which supports over 2.3 million jobs and generates $230 billion in annual wages.

The letter emphasizes that America’s global AI leadership should not come at the expense of its creative industries and intellectual property.

This debate reflects broader tensions between Silicon Valley and the entertainment industry over the use of copyrighted content in AI training. While tech companies claim that “fair use” exceptions are necessary for innovation, creatives insist on proper licensing agreements to protect their work.

The issue has gained urgency following recent strikes by Hollywood unions over AI-related concerns and new California laws safeguarding digital likenesses
