International Women’s Day 2025: How to celebrate in Bristol

Taking place on the 8th March, International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women in social, cultural and political spaces, as well as raising awareness for the issues women and girls face on a daily basis.

This year’s theme is Accelerate Action, which focuses on finding solutions to societally ingrained gender inequality and aims to increase the speed of progress on tackling disparities.

Thousands of people are expected to take part in the celebration, with a range of events happening in Bristol alone. Here’s how you can get involved, whether you identify as a woman yourself or you simply want to show your support.

1. March and Candlelit Vigil – Saturday 8th March

Organised by IWD Bristol, there’s a march taking place from Castle Park at 5pm to mark the day, focusing on bringing attention to those affected by sexist, racist and domestic violence.

Standing in solidarity with Palestine, the event is also calling for the government to end its relationship with Israel, as called for by Palestinian feminists.

2. Bristol Women’s Voice IWD Celebration – Saturday 8th March

With a range of panels, stalls and talks, Bristol Women’s Voice is organising an all-day event in City Hall, celebrating the diverse communities of women that live in the city.

With talks ranging from Women in STEM to business inclusivity and healthcare, there’s lots going on, with events starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm.

There are many activities scheduled, food vendors and a range of stalls from female-owned businesses, too. Easy to access, UWE are running a student trip to the event too.

3. Events at M Shed – Saturday 8th March

Iconic Bristol museum M Shed is hosting a day of events, from self-defence classes to circus performances and live music.

Tickets can be brought on Headfirst, with all proceeds going to Bristol 24/7’s social projects, helping women in the community.

4. Bristol Museum Closing Party – Saturday 8th March

After events at M Shed, Bristol Museum is hosting a night of live music to end the day, with a range of DJs showcasing female musical talent.

With support from the Alice Project, the event hopes to raise awareness of the obstacles women face in the music industry, especially those who DJ in Bristol’s nightlife scene.

5. IWD at the University of Bristol

A range of university faculties are putting on events and talks, from successful women in business to discussions on female access to STEM subjects.

A lot of these talks are offering networking opportunities as well as refreshments, taking place across this week.

6. The Bristol Sister Showcase – Saturday 8th of March

Hosted by the Jam Jar, this event sees some of Bristol’s best female bands will be performing, with a range of genres from funk to hip-hop and soul.

All performers and bands are Bristol born-and-bred, showcasing everything the city has to offer, in one of the city’s coolest music venues.
