James Cameron Reveals ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Will Surpass ‘The Way of Water’ in Runtime

James Cameron has confirmed that “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third instalment in the Avatar series, will be longer than its predecessor, “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

The 2022 film, “The Way of Water,” had a runtime of three hours and 12 minutes (187 minutes), making it one of the longest major releases in recent years.

Cameron explained that the decision to extend the runtime of “Fire and Ash” was due to the abundance of compelling ideas initially packed into the first act of “The Way of Water.” He felt that the pacing was too fast, and character development was not adequately explored.

Therefore, he decided to split the narrative into two films, allowing for more depth in both stories.

In a recent sitdown with Empire, Cameron said he and his writers developed too much material for “The Way of Water,” and when production began, had to move some of the story from that movie into its sequel, “Fire and Ash.”

“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron said. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’” For that reason, Cameron teased, “movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025, and promises to deliver stunning visuals and high emotional stakes, exploring more of Pandora than ever before.

Despite some audience concerns about the extended runtime, many fans have expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming film, embracing the opportunity to immerse themselves in Cameron’s vision.
