Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou remains in limbo about his future in Soweto.
It was a tumultuous start to the season for the former Moroka Swallows man; an injury kept him out of matchday squads until January 5 – three days later, he recorded his first minute of the season, subbing on in the dying seconds during AmaKhosi’s 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch.
The 26-year-old is back playing week-in-week-out and has won over the Kaizer Chiefs faithful with his silky passes and Yaya Toure-like demeanour.
However, injuries still haunt the attacking midfielder – who missed a further two games in early February due to a knock – and perhaps is why the Soweto giants are reluctant to offer Matlou a second successive contract extension.
Last season, Kaizer Chiefs, knowing that Matlou had the chance to sign a pre-contract elsewhere, waited until the final weeks to secure his future only to be handed a severe injury blow in the offseason – Nasreddine Nabi’s side will be cautious of it happening again.
Contract update
According to SABC Sport, the Soweto-born star is eager to continue with Nasreddine Nabi while Kaizer Chiefs continue to weigh up their options.
A renewal and release seem just as likely; it’s up to Matlou to show his indispensability and earn his spot.
“For now the ball is in his court,” a Siya source confirmed in late January.
“The club has made it clear to him that the games he will play between now and the of the season determine his future,
“They have told him that they understand that the injury has disrupted his progress at the club and the technical team has given him the chance to play then it’s now up to him to save his own career,” the source added.
“So now it’s all up to him whether he will extend his contract or not. At least the club [Kaizer Chiefs] has communicated with him what they expect from him and that is to prove himself.”
Should Kaizer Chiefs renew George Matlou’s contract?
