Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani says Kaizer Chiefs‘ second goal against Stellenbosch should have been disallowed.
Amakhosi marched into the Nedbank Cup semi-finals after controversially edging out Stellies 3-1 this past weekend. With the score locked at 1-1 in injury time, Chiefs scored what appeared to be the winner only to be ruled out by the linesman who raised his flag for a push on Stellenbosch keeper Sage Stephens.
Referee Sikhumbuso Gasa overturned the decision and allowed the goal to stand. Dissecting the incident on Soccerzone, Hlungwani said the assistant referee’s decision should have stood, which would have disallowed Kaizer Chiefs’ goal.
“You see an assistant referee correctly positioned and the referee, but you see George (Matlou) not playing the ball, he plays the goalkeeper.
“When you challenge the goalkeeper inside the goal area, now flags comes out to say I have seen an infringement from George. You can see the infringement for yourself.”

“The linesman now says I saw a foul, but the referee says I didn’t see a foul. Now, what happens after here is that the review committee will sit and determine the correct decision,” Hlungwani added.
“Here on Soccerzone we can tell you now that the correct decision came from the assistant referee for a foul. So, this was not supposed to be given as a goal, it should’ve been given as a foul.”
Hlungwani has been heavily criticised by some of the Kaizer Chiefs supporters in recent months. His analysis has at times perceived to be against Amakhosi.
