Chiefs have set their sights on a fresh midfield addition, and sources confirm they’ve enquired about Sundowns’ rising star, Thapelo Maseko. In an ambitious attempt to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, Amakhosi appear ready to challenge the dominance of the Brazilians by poaching one of their own.
Chiefs step up interest
Insiders close to both clubs revealed that Chiefs scouts have long admired Maseko’s talent and believe he could play a pivotal role in their rebuild.
“It’s a move that Chiefs are contemplating working on. The Chiefs scouts know Maseko very well and they know what he could bring to the team and that’s why they are enquiring about him. For now, it’s still early to say what will happen but what I can tell you is that they are seriously looking into that,” the source disclosed.
Amakhosi could finally land target
Interestingly, Maseko has been on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar even before his high-profile switch to Sundowns.
“But let me tell you something, Kaizer Chiefs wanted Maseko even before Mamelodi Sundowns but you know how things work in football. But since he is not playing regularly now at Sundowns there is a chance that Chiefs could get him this time around. They are working on that,” the insider continued.
At 21, Maseko enjoyed regular football at SuperSport United during the 2022/2023 season. However, since his move to Sundowns, he has struggled to secure minutes, making just 11 appearances across all competitions—with no goals or assists to his name.
After recovering from injury, Maseko has featured in the reserve league to regain match fitness, further fueling speculation about his future.
Failed loan move opens door
SuperSport United reportedly attempted to bring Maseko back on loan during the January transfer window, but the move failed to materialize. That development may have paved the way for Kaizer Chiefs to step in and make a serious push.
While nothing is confirmed yet, all signs point to Kaizer Chiefs making a determined effort to secure Maseko’s signature ahead of next season. If the deal goes through, it could mark a significant shift in the power dynamics of South African football.
