Karachi DIG traffic replaced, new regulations enforced

The recent surge in traffic accidents in Karachi, particularly those involving dumper trucks, has prompted significant actions by the Sindh government.

The Sindh government, responding to public outcry over increasing road accidents, ordered DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema’s transfer and to report to the Central Police Office.

Meanwhile, Pir Muhammad Shah has been appointed as the new DIG Traffic Karachi.

Furthermore, the entry timings of heavy dumpers into Karachi have been revised — these vehicles will now only be allowed on city roads from 10 pm to 6 am.

In a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, a series of strict traffic regulations were introduced.

CM Murad Ali Shah directed strict enforcement of traffic laws and vehicle regulations.

The meeting, held at the Chief Minister Sindh’s House, was attended by key officials, including Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and senior police officials.

The Sindh government has mandated that all vehicles operating in the province must have valid fitness certificates. Unfit vehicles will not be allowed on roads.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar convened a separate meeting at the Central Police Office, directing law enforcement to strictly enforce new traffic regulations.

He announced that starting Monday, traffic police officers, including SSPs, must be visibly deployed on city roads to ensure compliance.

Lanjar stressed that no one, including government officials and his own family, would be above the law.

“If my family or I break traffic rules, we should be fined like any other citizen,” he asserted.

These extensive reforms are part of the Sindh government’s efforts to restore order to Karachi’s increasingly congested roads, prioritizing public safety through strict enforcement and oversight.

At a press conference, Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon outlined the Sindh government’s strategy to strengthen vehicle fitness regulations.

He announced that all commercial and heavy vehicles must secure valid fitness certificates from the transport department, with unfit vehicles being barred from the roads.

Excise officials disclosed that 80,000 license plates are ready for distribution, urging applicants with pending requests to collect them.

Additionally, authorities are preparing a crackdown on fake number plates and unregistered vehicles, warning that violators will face immediate legal consequences.
