Khama Billiat remains committed despite reported financial troubles

Despite recent reports of financial difficulties in South Africa, former Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat remains committed to his national team duties.

The veteran forward, who now plies his trade in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League (ZPSL), has expressed his dedication to representing his country and giving his best for the Warriors.

“It’s a great feeling to represent your country, and we are always ready to give our best for the nation,” Billiat told Scottland FC Media. “I just want to say to all the fans, to all Zimbabweans, thank you so much for the support that you have been giving. The support is always pushing us to do better and to be the best versions of ourselves. This is our nation, and we truly appreciate the call-up.”

Billiat is set to play a crucial role as Zimbabwe faces Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Thursday before traveling to Uyo, Nigeria, for a clash against the Super Eagles on Monday. His experience and quality remain vital to his national team’s campaign, and his focus on the game remains unwavering despite off-field challenges.

Financial Woes in South Africa

According to a report by City Press, Billiat is allegedly facing financial trouble in South Africa. The former Kaizer Chiefs striker reportedly owes Standard Bank approximately R372 066.

The debt originates from an overdraft credit facility granted to him in 2020. While Billiat made payments up until 2023, he failed to continue settling the monthly installments, which were expected to be between R80 000 and R90 000. Attempts by a sheriff from the Johannesburg High Court to serve him with a summons have been unsuccessful, as he no longer resides in South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s Highest-Paid Footballer

Amidst these financial concerns, Billiat remains Zimbabwe’s highest-paid player in the ZPSL. Following a lucrative stint with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, where he was among the top earners in the DStv Premiership, he returned to Zimbabwe, continuing to command a significant salary.

During the 2024 season, Billiat earned R95,500 (US$5,000) per month at Yadah FC. After his contract ended in December 2024, he secured a move to Scottland FC, where he now earns an estimated R108,800 (US$6,000) per month, solidifying his status as the league’s top earner.

While financial challenges off the pitch have raised concerns, Billiat’s influence in Zimbabwean football remains undeniable.
