Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Records First Locally Transmitted Monkeypox Case

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has confirmed its first locally transmitted case of monkeypox (mpox).

The confirmation was announced by the province’s Chief Minister’s Health Adviser, Ihtesham Ali, on Sunday.

The infection was detected in a woman who was admitted to a hospital on February 18 after experiencing fever and body aches, according to Dr. Fazal Majeed, the Director of Public Health.

The woman’s symptoms developed into rashes and moles appearing on her body and inside her mouth on February 19. Samples were collected on February 20 and sent to the Public Health Reference Laboratory at Khyber Medical University, where the diagnosis was confirmed on February 21.

This marks the first locally transmitted case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as previous cases were linked to international travel. The woman’s husband had recently returned from a Gulf country and was later confirmed to be infected with mpox as well.

A rapid response team was formed to conduct contact tracing and implement preventive measures, including home isolation for the affected household. Dr. Majeed has urged the public to remain vigilant about mpox symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if suspicious symptoms appear.
