The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain that could lead to flooding of roads, settlements and infrastructure in parts of KZN on Saturday, 15 March.
This warning comes just days after the weather service had issued an orange level 6 warning for disruptive rain which wreaked havoc in various parts of the province. Bridges and vehicles were washed away while people’s homes were also damaged. Sadly, two people were also confirmed dead.
ADVERSE WEATHER TO PERSIST IN KZN THIS WEEKEND
In the latest warning, SAWS said persistent rainfall over the eastern parts of KZN which may lead to flooding of roads and settlements, damage to infrastructure and mud-based houses is expected on Saturday.
“A ridging high pressure will be situated south-east of the country advecting some moisture over KZN. This weather system will lead to scattered showers and rain over KZN. Rainfall accumulation of at least 40mm is expected along the south coast which may cause significant impacts,” SAWS said.
Some of the possible impacts include flooding of settlements, roads and bridges, damage to property and infrastructure, poor driving conditions as well as major traffic disruption due to roads and bridges being closed or flooded.
The weather service has also urged people to stay indoors if possible, avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams where water is above the ankles.
“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. In rural areas, move livestock to higher grounds,” the weather service warned.
