Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Dada Morero, has recently gave an update on the proposed increases for service charges for Joburg prepaid electricity users, reported BusinessTech on 28 March 2025.
According to the report, prepaid electricity users in Johannesburg were expected to pay more for service charges. However, Morero has announced that the City Power tariff, 2025/2026 budget and Draft Property Rates report have been withdrawn.
Instead, new proposals have been put forward. Here’s all you need to know regarding service charges for Joburg prepaid electricity users.
SERVICE CHARGES FOR JOBURG PREPAID ELECTRICITY USERS
According to the initial proposals, Joburg prepaid electricity users would have seen a price hike of R70. The current amount is R200 per month. This means if the hike went ahead, the city’s residents would have had to pay R270 in service charges.
This tax came into effect in July 2024, with prepaid users being split into “low” and “high” users. Low users have been exempt from this service charge, while high users are expected to pay it every month.
HOW MUCH WILL PREPAID ELECTRICITY USERS PAY UNDER NEW PROPOSAL?
The new proposal will see Joburg prepaid electricity users paying the same amount. This means there will be no change to the service charges and residents will continue to pay R200 per month. Morero has urged the city’s residents to ensure they pay their municipal accounts.
“As we continue this process with the upcoming public participation meetings towards finalising the 2025/2026 Budget, we urge residents and businesses to be mindful of their water and electricity consumption. And to remain committed to paying municipal accounts, as these payments help us improve basic services,” expressed Morero.
