Limpopo cyclists inspire South Africa with epic journey

Three young men from Limpopo are proving that determination and passion can move mountains—or in their case, pedal across 1,700 kilometres.

Cape Town. Gauta Mahlakoane, Karabo Mokoo, and Maxwell Ndou, dubbed the ‘Gauta BMX cyclists,’ have captured the hearts of South Africans. They took an extraordinary cycling journey from Burgersfort to Cape Town.

CYCLISTS INSPIRING CHANGE

Their mission? To inspire youth, promote healthy living, and offer a positive alternative to social challenges like substance abuse.

The trio set off on 2 April 2025 with nothing but basic bicycles and big dreams. They aim to show young people that there’s a better path than drugs and alcohol.

“We want to inspire others to stay active and avoid gangsterism,” said Maxwell Ndou during an interview.

Their journey has been far from easy, often requiring them to sleep at police stations or petrol stops for safety. Yet, their resilience has turned their ride into a viral sensation on social media.

JACARANDA FM AND THE GOOD MORNING ANGELS

Now nearing the final stretch of their journey, the cyclists have received a major boost from Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund.

The programme donated R20,000 to cover their accommodation for the last few days of their trip.

Speaking on air with Martin Bester, host of Breakfast with Martin Bester, Maxwell expressed his gratitude.

“Thank you Jacaranda FM for the support. Everyone thought we were crazy when we started this journey, but we believe in what we’re doing. This help will go a long way.”

MARTIN BESTER SHOWS SUPPORT

Martin Bester shared his admiration for the cyclists: “This story is everything South Africa needs right now—young people chasing a dream, challenging limits, and inspiring others. We’re proud to support these incredible young men.”

The cyclists’ route took them through various towns, including Leeu Gamka and Laingsburg. They plan overnight stops in Worcester before reaching Cape Town today (Sunday).

Upon their return to Limpopo, they hope to establish a cycling club to introduce more young people to the sport and create a safe space for youth in their community.

A DEEPER PURPOSE

Their representative, Modisane Mokgosi, highlighted the deeper purpose behind their journey.

“Their main reason for embarking on this trip is to campaign against social issues such as gender-based violence and substance abuse while inspiring young people to do something positive with their lives.”

Despite challenges along the way—such as moments of waning morale—the overwhelming support from South Africans has kept them going.

Their audacious journey has not only raised awareness but also sparked hope across the nation.

CYCLISTS MAKING AN IMPACT

The cyclists are determined to continue making an impact beyond this ride. As Maxwell noted, “This is just the beginning. We want to represent South Africa one day as professional cyclists.”
