Lingering rain & cooler temps to start the week

Sunday evening update: Hope you all had a great weekend! We’ve got an unsettled start to the workweek, but if you’re looking for some warmer weather, just hang in there… big changes are on the way! Let’s break it all down.

Tonight, we’ve got some weather systems on the move. There’s an upper low and a surface low, which are areas of low pressure at different altitudes—think of the upper low as high up in the sky and the surface low closer to the ground. Both are tracking eastward, pushing a weather boundary northward. As a result, showers are spreading north, too. For most of us, the rain will be light, but there could be some pockets of moderate rainfall developing later tonight. Temperatures will settle into the lower to mid-40s, which is right around average for early March. So, if you’re heading out, don’t forget the umbrella!

Rain, rain, go away? Not quite! Monday is going to be wet—and not just a little wet, potentially quite soggy, especially if you’re in the southeastern part of our area. Imagine that low-pressure “train” now parked near the Georgia coast, spreading rain across a good chunk of our region. Even after the surface low moves away, another system up high will keep the rain going. There might be a brief break, but don’t get your hopes up.

We’ll also have a slight chance of thunderstorms due to atmospheric instability and lift. Thankfully, severe weather is not expected, but some of the storms could bring gusty winds and lightning. Rainfall totals will be between 1 to 2 inches, but isolated higher amounts are possible across our southern counties.

As if the rain wasn’t enough, temperatures will also take a hit. Widespread rain, low clouds, and a breezy northeast wind will keep highs in the low to mid-50s, with some spots struggling to get out of the 40s.

By Monday night, the rain will finally start to clear out as that upper-level system moves east. It’ll still be chilly, though, with lows dropping into the mid to upper 30s. Thankfully, the wind will likely be strong enough to prevent frost.

Now, here’s the good news! Starting Tuesday, we’re in for a treat. High pressure will build in, bringing drier conditions and much warmer temperatures! Highs will soar into the mid to upper 70s by midweek, and some spots could even hit 80 degrees by late week.

There’s a little blip on the radar for Thursday—a weak disturbance could bring some clouds, but right now, it looks like it’ll stay mostly dry.

Looking ahead to the weekend… The forecast is still a bit of a wildcard, but early indications suggest a strong cold front could sweep through the Southeast by Saturday evening or Sunday. There’s still a lot of uncertainty in the timing and strength, but with the right ingredients in place, severe weather could be a possibility. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this system and will bring you updates as we get more data in the coming days!
