Mamelodi Sundowns star says injury helped him

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has suggested that his injury setback was a blessing in disguise.

RONWEN WILLIAMS GRATEFUL FOR INJURY

The 33-year-old goalkeeper missed five games for Sundowns in February after suffering a shoulder injury. “No player wants to be injured, but I think it [the injury] came at the right time for me,” said Williams via FARPost. “I’ve played so much football over the last few years, the last few months and that injury, it’s done me wonders. I’ve got more energy now. I’m looking forward to the games, and I get excited again.

“Before, it was like you play every three days. There’s no excitement because you’re doing it over and over and over, and you don’t enjoy the game anymore,” the Sundowns star added.

“So, yeah, it’s done me wonders. It’s given me time to relax, to miss the game, just get that spark back because, if you could see, there were some goals that I conceded that normally you don’t expect Ronwen to concede those goals.

“We are all human beings; we get tired and frustrated. And it [injury] came from me at the perfect time. And now I think the team and the country need me more than ever.

“So, yeah, I’m over that. I’m looking forward to finishing the year on a good note,” concluded Williams.

In the meantime, the Gqeberha-born star will take a trip with Bafana Bafana to face Benin in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Tuesday at 18:00.
