Mamelodi Sundowns to earn R174 million at FIFA Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns will earn a fee of US$9.55 million [R174 million] for participating in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Sundowns are among four African countries taking part in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, which kicks off in June. The tournament will be played in the United States from June 14 to July 13. The other three African teams in the Club World Cup are Esperance, Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly.

Are Mamelodi Sundowns likely to win the FIFA Club World Cup?

Miguel Cardoso’s men will probably not get close to lifting the cup, but they might reach the knockout stages. They are in a tough group that consists of Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense and Ulsan. If the Brazilians progress to the round of 16, they will pocket US$7.5 million [R136.7 million].

With the tournament kicking off two or three weeks after the PSL season ends, Cardoso will need to rotate his squad in the coming matches. The Brazilians are still in the CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup. If they manage to reach each final, they might bring a fatigued squad to the big tournament

Mamelodi Sundowns have played in the Club World Cup eight years ago but failed to win a match. This time around, Masandawana have an experienced squad to fight with the very best teams.
