Mamelodi Sundowns utility star’s future at Chloorkop is up in the air.
Rivaldo Coetzee’s current destiny remains uncertain as his contract approaches its expiration at the end of June. While the club holds an option to extend his deal for another season, the midfielder has yet to make an appearance under head coach Miguel Cardoso due to injury setbacks.
The 28-year-old picked up an injury just before Cardoso replaced Manqoba Mngqithi in December. Since then, he has struggled to break into the matchday squad. With only two months left in the season, the window to impress his new coach is closing fast. Sundowns must decide by the end of May whether to extend his contract or part ways.
Agent Makaab remains confident in Coetzee’s future
Despite concerns over Coetzee’s lack of game time, his agent, Mike Makaab, remains optimistic.
“He’s doing fine. I think they haven’t rushed him (to return), but he seems to be doing well. Let’s hope that he is back on track soon,” Makaab stated.
When asked if the lack of minutes might hurt Coetzee’s chances, he dismissed any worries.
“Not at all (worried). If Sundowns don’t exercise the option, I am confident that we will have suitors. He is a talented player.”
At this stage, there is no confirmed date for Coetzee’s return to the matchday squad. His primary challenge remains regaining full fitness and competing for a spot before the season ends. With Sundowns set to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in June, the former Ajax Cape Town star will be eager to prove himself and earn a place in the squad for the prestigious tournament in the United States.
Sundowns’ loyalty to Coetzee: Long-term investment
Over the years, Sundowns have shown unwavering faith in Coetzee’s abilities despite his injury setbacks. In return, when fit, he has delivered strong performances whether deployed in defense or midfield. The club now faces a crucial decision—will they extend his stay or move on from the talented but injury-prone star?
As the deadline looms, all eyes will be on Sundowns’ management. If the club chooses not to renew his contract, Coetzee could attract interest from other teams eager to secure a player of his caliber. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining the next chapter of his career.
