Motorists have been caught in traffic gridlock on the M25 after a multi-vehicle crash in Surrey.
Drivers were warned of 90 minute delays ahead of the peak rush hour traffic on the London Orbital Motorway.
The collision involving multiple vehicles happened anticlockwise on the M25 at junction J6 for Caterham.
The crash site is located near the M23 junction towards Gatwick Airport, so journeys to and from the airport could be affected.
National Highways said: ‘All emergency services, Traffic Officers and recovery agents are working to reopen the lanes as soon as it is safe.
‘Delays of up to 90 minutes reported on the approach.’
Traffic analyst Inrix said the M25 is blocked due to the crash and recovery work, with congestion reaching to J8 (Reigate).
Congestion has spilled onto the A22 between Caterham and junction 6 (Godstone Interchange).
We have approached the emergency services for a comment.
Part of the M25, one of the busiest carriageways in the UK, was closed last weekend for ongoing bridge repairs as part of a £317,000,000 upgrade at junction 10.
The junction will close again for weekend repairs on March 21 until March 24.
Pubs said the works, which have been going on since 2022, have been a ‘kick in the teeth’ after gridlocked traffic.
A cafe owner located just yards from junction 10 said the weekend closures have ‘ruined’ his business.
