Mustafa Murder Case: ATC extends 2 suspects’ physical remand by 5 days

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi on Saturday extended the physical remand of two suspects Armaghan and Sheraz by five days in connection with the Mustafa Amir murder case.

Today, both Armaghan and Sheraz were presented before ATC No.3 in Karachi by the police after the expiry of their four-day physical remand granted earlier on Tuesday.

The Investigation Officer, Muhammad Ali, requested a 14-day physical remand for further investigation.

However, the court extended their physical remand by five days instead.

The court also extended the remand of co-accused Shiraz Bukhari alias Shavez and issued directives for conducting his medical examination.

This development follows recent legal proceedings in which the Sindh High Court (SHC) set aside Armaghan’s initial judicial remand, allowing police to grant him physical custody for further investigation.

The case involves allegations of kidnapping and murder of Mustafa Amir on January 6 in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA), with his body later found torched in Balochistan.

Additionally, an inquiry committee has been formed by Balochistan police to investigate potential negligence during the handling of this case.

Meanwhile, Mustafa Amir’s body was exhumed as part of ongoing investigations to determine the cause of death through DNA testing.

Suspect breaks down in court

The investigation officer (IO) requested the court grant Armaghan a 14-day physical remand during today’s proceedings to record his statement.

The officer also stated that a forensic analysis was required for the weapons and laptops—reportedly 64 in number—seized from the key suspect’s bungalow.

During the hearing, Armaghan reportedly collapsed in the courtroom. The prosecutor general noted that he had similarly collapsed in the high court and ATC No. II, yet medical examinations had confirmed he was in good health.

Armaghan, complaining of mistreatment, alleged that he had been denied food.

When asked if Tahir Rehman Tanoli, who submitted documents on behalf of his mother, was his legal counsel, Armaghan denied it, claiming he had been misled into signing the documents. When given the opportunity to speak, he broke down in tears.

The IO informed the court that bloodstains found on a carpet in Armaghan’s residence matched Mustafa’s mother’s, adding that the suspect was also an absconder in multiple cases registered at the Boat Basin, Darakhshan, Clifton, and Sahil police stations.

Additionally, the officer alleged that Armaghan was operating an illegal call centre and warehouse, requiring further investigation into his accomplices and potential involvement in money laundering.

Meanwhile, Advocate Khurram Abbas, representing the other accused, Shiraz, argued that his client had no connection to the case and that the police had confiscated his laptop during the raid on Armaghan’s residence.

After the hearing, the court extended the physical remand of both suspects by five days.
