Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe will miss Sunday’s Premier League match with Manchester United after being admitted to hospital.

Howe was taken into hospital on Friday night after feeling ill for a number of days and has been kept overnight while undergoing tests.

The club have not specified the illness, but say that Howe is ‘conscious and talking with his family’.

In a statement the club said: ‘The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.

‘Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

‘Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.

‘Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club’s first team staff.’

Howe was not present at Newcastle’s pre-match press conference, with assistant Tindall standing in for the 47-year-old.

‘He’s been really poorly. Bed-ridden. We’ve been in daily contact but it’s not affected any of the preparations,’ Tindall said of Howe on Friday.

Newcastle currently sit seventh in the league table and welcome United to St. James’ Park on Sunday as they look to sustain their hopes of qualify for the Champions League.

The Magpies have already secured a spot in next season’s Europa League after their Carabao Cup victory last month and are currently just one point behind fifth-place Aston Villa who occupy the last Champions League spot.

Ruben Amorim’s side, meanwhile, will look to end their three-match winless run but may rotate their side as they prioritise their crunch Europa League quarter-final second leg with Lyon next Thursday.

Newcastle are expected to be able to call upon the services of star striker Alexander Isak, but will make a late call on the fitness of Anthony Gordon.

United could welcome Kobbie Mainoo back into the starting XI after the midfielder made his return off the bench in midweek.
