Utkal Day, also known as Odisha Day, is an important event in the history of India, celebrated every year on April 1. It was one of the most powerful kingdoms of ancient India and its historical roots go back to the Mahabharata period. Odisha is an important state located on the east coast of India. It is bordered by Chhattisgarh in the west, Jharkhand in the north, West Bengal in the northeast and Andhra Pradesh in the south. This year in 2025, Odisha will celebrate its 90th foundation day on 1 April.
During the British rule, Odisha was under the Bengal Presidency. Later it was reorganized as the province of Bihar and Orissa. But after a long struggle of the local people and social reformers, Odisha was recognized as a separate state. The state of Odisha came into existence as an independent province on 1 April 1936. Before independence, Odisha was a part of the Bengal Presidency under British rule. The state was separated from the province of Bengal and Bihar on 1 April 1936 after a long struggle of three centuries.
The formation of Odisha was the result of years of struggle and innumerable sacrifices of the Oriya people. Utkal Diwas is a day to remember these struggles and pay tribute to those who fought for a separate state for the people of Odisha. The main language of Odisha is Odia, which is considered to be a language derived from Sanskrit and Prakrit, which developed in the 6th century AD. It is one of the classical languages of India.
Odisha is full of mineral metal industry. Rourkela Steels, National Aluminum located here are world famous companies. The world famous Chilika Lake is situated here for tourism and the world famous temple of Lord Jagannath is also located here. The culture here is very rich and the famous Jagannath Temple (Puri) of Odisha is a world famous religious place. Apart from this, the Sun Temple of Konark, Lingaraj Temple and Chilika Lake are also included in the major attractions here.
