At least one person has been killed after being stabbed several times in a knife attack in a picturesque French market town.
A peaceful Saturday afternoon turned into chaos after the incident in the city’s market square Place du Marche and Rue Lavoisier.
One person died after being stabbed several times, while others were seriously injured after a knifeman launched an attack in Mulhouse, eastern France.
The man allegedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great) in Arabic just moments before the attack.
The suspect is known to the police and he is registered in the terrorism and radicalisation prevention file (FSPRT) and reportedly has a previous conviction related to advocating terrorism, Le Parisien reports.
Among the injured is a city parking officer and two municipal police officers who were stabbed in the neck and throat, according to the prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.
Footage appears to show the suspect being detained by officers as he lay on the ground.
His motive has not been revealed at this stage.
The incident unfolded in the heart of the historic city which sits near the Swiss and German border.
