Orlando Pirates better than last season, but enough to win league?

Orlando Pirates have already bettered their win record for last season with only 19 league games played so far.

However, the question remains as to whether or not their efforts will be enough to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns this term.

Last weekend, the Buccaneers beat Sundowns 2-1 to reduce the gap between them by 15 points with four games in hand.

After the game, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro confidently said the title was far from over, saying there is still a long way to go.

ORLANDO PIRATES BETTER LAST SEASON’S WIN RECORD

While Orlando Pirates remain second best after Sundowns, they have shown so much improvement this season.

After 19 league games, the Soweto giants find themselves sitting with 14 wins, four losses and one draw.

Now, the 14 wins represent the number of times they won their league matches throughout the previous campaign.

Pirates’ last season record reads 14 wins, eight draws and eight defeats after 30 league games.

With 11 games to go, the Sea Robbers are certainly going to win more matches but will that be enough?

Sundowns are already on 58 points and in pole position to defend their crown with ease without worrying about Pirates.

Furthermore, they just need 15 points from their remaining matches to equal their own and PSL record of 73 points after 30 games.

And for Pirates to think they can catch Sundowns is certainly illusional.

Even when Pirates recorded more wins (16) in 2022-23 than last season (14), they still could not topple Sundowns.

CAN THE BUCCANEERS TOPPLE THE BRAZILIANS?
