Orlando Pirates closing in – Kaizer Chiefs to miss out on Basadien?

Orlando Pirates are silently closing in on Fawaaz Basadien but are Kaizer Chiefs going to miss out? Let’s find out.

The Bucs are not backing down in their determined chase for Stellenbosch FC’s in-demand left-back, Fawaaz Basadien. Despite Stellies strong stance on keeping their star player, Pirates remain relentless in their pursuit. The 28-year-old defender has emerged as a top target for the Buccaneers, who are seeking to inject fresh energy and depth into their left side.

Chiefs tried and failed to land Basadien

Before the season kicked off, Kaizer Chiefs made a serious attempt to sign Basadien. However, the move failed to materialize, leaving the door open for their fierce Soweto rivals to swoop in. Pirates now appear to be in pole position to secure his signature.

“Chiefs’ interest was serious but there was no agreement reached between the two clubs and now it looks like Pirates are coming in strong for him. Don’t be surprised to see him join them when the season ends but you never know in football because things change very quickly and other clubs might come knocking as well,” said a source close to the player.

Why Pirates want Basadien and why the move makes sense

With current options Deon Hotto (34), Innocent Maela (32), and Paseka Mako (30) all on the wrong side of 30, Pirates see Basadien as a much-needed reinforcement. While Hotto has seen the most action, his transition into a more advanced role creates an opening at the back.

“With Hotto playing in a more advanced role, Basadien could play in the left-wing-back position. Depending on the position on the day or who the new coach will be,” the insider explained.

Basadien’s versatility and youth make him a strategic addition to the team’s evolving structure. The club is also reportedly evaluating the future of club captain Maela, whose contract expires in June.

From Stellies to Sea Robbers—A trend in the making?

Should the deal go through, Basadien will reunite with Deano van Rooyen, his former Stellenbosch teammate who made the same move to Orlando Pirates. The trend of poaching top talent from Stellies appears to be gaining momentum.

Basadien’s performances have been nothing short of stellar this season. He played a crucial role in Stellenbosch’s historic run to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, helping to eliminate defending champions Zamalek.

Now a Bafana Bafana international, Basadien’s rising profile only boosts his value. The Sea Robbers know they’ll need to spend big if they want to convince Stellenbosch to sell.

“It has not been easy for Basadien because he wants to try out a new experience at a bigger club but he has remained professional even though the club didn’t accept any offers for him this season and last season,” said the source.
