Orlando Pirates face must-win clash, as we ask can Jose Riveiro break the curse?
Pirates head coach Riveiro has outlined his expectations for their crucial league encounter against Stellenbosch FC. With the Buccaneers still fighting on three competitive fronts, squad depth and strategy will play a vital role in their campaign.
Pirates travel to Athlone Stadium on Tuesday (19:30) to face a Stellenbosch side that has proven to be a difficult opponent. The last time these teams met, a lone strike from Devin Titus secured a win for Stellies at Orlando Stadium in December. In league competition, Riveiro’s squad has only managed one victory against Stellenbosch, making this fixture a true test of their title ambitions.
Stellenbosch’s threat looms large
The Buccaneers must navigate a formidable Stellenbosch side eager to secure a return to continental football. After making their CAF Confederations Cup debut this season and reaching the quarterfinals, where they will take on Egyptian giants Zamalek SC, Stellenbosch has shown they are no pushovers.
“Tough opponent, another game away from home, we have a busy month on the road, and I think we haven’t managed to get a league victory in Stellenbosch during my time here. We only won one time in the MTN8,” Riveiro admitted.
“We know it’s a difficult team to play against, excellent players and a really good coaching staff, so we know it’s going to be a tough one in the physical and tactical aspect as well. But we will try to be at our best one more time.”
Riveiro confident in his squad depth
Despite opting not to reinforce his squad during the January transfer window, Riveiro remains confident in his team’s depth. Pirates offloaded several players without bringing in replacements, but the Spanish tactician believes his current squad has what it takes to compete across all competitions.
“I have 37 players in the squad, can you imagine? In most of the competitions around the world, you cannot have more than 25 – we have 37. So, the number cannot be a problem, we have quality in every department and every position,” Riveiro emphasized.
“This team is not about who’s playing so far, it’s about staying together, trying to be competitive no matter what, no matter who is in the starting XI and so far, we are doing well.”
Pirates must win to keep title hopes alive
With league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns 16 points ahead, Pirates cannot afford to drop points. While Sundowns host AmaZulu on the same night, the Sea Robbers, who sit on 39 points with four games in hand, must capitalize on every opportunity to close the gap.
A win against Stellenbosch would not only strengthen their title charge but also break their poor league record in the Mother City. Can Riveiro’s men rise to the occasion, or will Stellenbosch continue to be their Achilles’ heel?
