Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has caught the attention of a top African national team, with sources confirming that the Morocco FA is considering him for the prestigious Atlas Lions job.
Previously, teams in Finland and Sweden expressed interest in Riveiro, but Pirates have remained hopeful that the Spaniard will renew his contract, which expires at the end of the current season. However, Riveiro has opted to postpone contract discussions until the campaign concludes.
Morocco’s FA keen on securing Pirates’ Riveiro
Insiders close to the Buccaneers have revealed that the Morocco FA has made inquiries about Riveiro, identifying him as a potential successor to current coach Walid Regragui. Regragui’s three-year contract is set to expire in June 2025. And speculation is growing that Morocco is seeking a fresh approach.
A well-placed source confirmed the interest, stating. “You know his former assistant at Pirates, Sergio Almenara, has joined the Finland national team, which is still interested in Riveiro. But now the Morocco national team is also believed to be considering him. These factors are making it difficult for him to commit to Pirates at the moment. He is in demand elsewhere, and it’s hard to make a quick decision.”
Proximity to Spain a key factor
Beyond the professional appeal, Morocco’s proximity to Spain appears to be an attractive factor for Riveiro. A source close to the coach explained. “It’s believed that he has been missing home of late, and Morocco is closer to Spain. With a national team job, he wouldn’t have the same day-to-day club responsibilities, allowing him more time to visit home. That seems to be an advantage at the moment.”

With Regragui’s contract nearing its end this June, speculation is mounting that Morocco is actively evaluating new options. If Riveiro secures the position, it would mark a significant milestone in his coaching career.
