Orlando Pirates could be about to lose one of their longest serving coach yet in Jose Riveiro, according to reports.
Riveiro is deep within his third season at Pirates and has turned the Soweto giants into cup specialists.
Riveiro has five trophies at Pirates
During his tenure so far, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, his side is still in it with a chance of making it three Nedbank Cup titles in a row as well, this season. Beyond that, he is currently leading the Buccaneers into second place in the Betway Premiership as it stands. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten.
None of that seems to have gone unnoticed and as his star has continued to rise, so has interest. It is believed that, while there are no news on a contract renewal for Riveiro at Pirates, he could be lost to Europe! According to Soccer-Laduma, teams in Sweden and Finland are taking a keen look at his progress in South Africa!
Interest from Europe
“Jose Riveiro’s contract with Orlando Pirates ends on 30 June 2025 and it is believed that there is interest from Sweden and Finland’s national teams. Apparently it’s believed that there have been offers on the table since last year and those countries are just waiting to hear from the coach as he hasn’t yet signed a new contract with Pirates,” said one source.
Should he stay or should he go?
With virtually just three months left on his deal, time is running out for Riveiro and Pirates to agree fresh terms. Buccaneers, would you rather the Spanish tactician stays or goes?
