No Monnapule Saleng, no problem? Orlando Pirates are reportedly set to promote another attacking gem.
According to journalist Karabo Pasha, Pirates are close to handing Neo Mokoena a first team contract.
Mokoena is currently playing for the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team, and he has been a marvel to watch.
Furthermore, the report claims that Mokoena has already been training with the Pirates senior team.
He is a left winger, who is able to take on opposition defenders with ease, and his performances have caught the eye of Jose Riveiro.
Now, the news of Mokoena’s imminent promotion to the Pirates senior team comes at a time when Saleng’s future is still hanging in the balance.
Saleng’s contract with Pirates is set to expire in June, but previous reports suggested that the club may have triggered the two-year option they had on it.
However, to date, neither Pirates nor Saleng’s camp has confirmed the said reports.
Meanwhile, Mokoena’s promotion would further send a statement of intent on the side of Pirates after giving a few of their youngsters a chance in recent months.
Relebohile Mofokeng headlines that list alongside Mohau Nkota who have both taken the PSL by storm.
In recent matches, Riveiro has also unleashed right-back Siyabonga Ndlozi and left centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
And Mokoena’s addition to the roster means Pirates are taking a direction to turn their own nurtured youngsters into superstars.
What makes Mokoena’s story even more interesting is the fact that he only joined Pirates last year, and made his DDC debut in October 2024.
