Oscar-winner Adrien Brody throws his gum at girlfriend Georgina Chapman before accepting award

Adrien Brody had an awkward moment while collecting his best actor trophy at this year’s Oscars, when he was forced to throw his gum out into the audience.

The 51-year-old landed the coveted gong during the Academy Awards ceremony thanks to his role as Laszlo Toth in the Brutalist, beating out Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastian Stan on Sunday night.

He was joined at the ceremony by girlfriend Georgina Chapman, and gave the Marchesa founder a shout-out in his speech.

However, the fashion designer – ex-wife of Harvey Weinstein – had a very unexpected role to play in her beau’s big moment, when she attempted to catch his chewing gum on his way to the stage.

With the eyes of Hollywood resting on him, Adrien went into panic mode as he went to accept the latest addition to his trophy cabinet from 2024 winner Cillian Murphy – before realizing that he was chewing away.

He could be seen taking it out of his mouth and lobbing it towards Georgina, who sprang to action and attempted to catch it.

Sadly, the 48-year-old seemed to miss his shot and flailed while the camera panned to the Hollywood star walking to the stage.

Viewers watching on from home couldn’t get over the scenes, and unpacked Adrien’s antics on social media.

Reddit user Ok-Deer3119 begged: ‘Girl SWALLOW your gum.’

‘I’m still wondering why he didn’t just choose to swallow the gum instead of flinging it across the hall at his wife,’ Justdoitjenie agreed.

Hip2besquare18 said: ‘Props for chasing down gum.’

Over on Twitter, Alex Ritman agreed: ‘Adrien Brody’s girlfriend catching the gum he threw just before he got on the #Oscars stage is pure cinema.’

‘The Adrien Brody gum toss is instantly one of my all-time favorite #Oscars moments,’ Matt Stepanski joked.

Robert Adams reacted: ‘Adrien Brody tossing his gum out before the acceptance speech is a vibe! #Oscars.’

As Rama’s Screen laughed: ‘Find a woman who would catch a chewing gum from your mouth the same way Adrien Brody’s girlfriend caught his.

‘That’s who you should marry! #Oscars #AcademyAwards.’

In a very lengthy speech, Adrien – who previously took home the best actor trophy for the Pianist in 2003 – begged the public to ‘not let hate go unchecked’.

‘If I may just humbly begin by giving thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love that I’ve felt from this world, and every individual that has treated me with respect and appreciation,’ he began.

‘I feel so fortunate. Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glamorous and certain moments, it is, but the one thing that I’ve gained, having the privilege to come back here, is to have some perspective.

‘And no matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away.’

‘I share this with my amazing partner, Georgina, who has not only reinvigorated my own self worth, but my sense of value, and my values, and her beautiful children, Dash and India,’ he continued.

‘I know this has been a roller coaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life. And popsie’s coming home a winner.’

It was then that the music began playing, signaling that his time on stage was over, but he begged ceremony bosses to give him extra time.

‘Please, please, please. I’m wrapping up. I will wrap up,’ he added. ‘Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before. Thank you. It’s not my first rodeo, but I will be brief. I will not be egregious, I promise.

‘I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression, and of antisemitism and racism and of othering and I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world.

‘And I believe if the past can teach us anything, it’s a reminder to not let hate go unchecked.’
