
An apartment building in Sheffield has been evacuated after a man was seen ‘with weapons’.
Police were called to the Gateway apartment building in the Castlegate area of the city after 7pm yesterday.
Residents took refuge inside the nearby Ponds Forge sports centre and students at the Pinnacles accommodation block were told to stay inside.
Sheffield Parkway, between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way, remains closed this morning.
A Facebook post from South Yorkshire Police said: ‘Those within the building where the property is have been evacuated and those within the neighbouring buildings have been asked to stay indoors while officers conduct their work.’
In an updated statement from this morning, police posted: ‘Road closure remains in place
‘We, alongside other emergency services remain on scene at Broad Street in Sheffield.


‘Just after 7pm last night (Monday 10 February) we responded to concerns for a man inside a property, alleged to have weapons and pose a risk to himself.
‘Those within the building where the property is have been evacuated and those within the neighbouring buildings have been asked to stay indoors while officers conduct their work.
‘The Sheffield Parkway, between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way will remain shut-please plan, and find an alternative route this morning.’
Commuters are advised to avoid the area which is still closed to drivers this morning.
Police also confirmed that the tram network is also affected.
