A FedEx cargo plane caught fire shortly after take-off, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

The plane was flying out of Newark Airport in New York when the explosion happened at 8am local time today.

Video footage shows flames coming from one of the engines as the aircraft flies overhead, while witnesses reported hearing explosion-like sounds.

The plane was airbourne for around nine minutes, according to flight data, before making an emergency landing at the same airport.

A statement form FedEx reads: ‘Our crew declared an emergency and returned safely to Newark.

‘We are thankful for the quick actions of our crew and first responders.’

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the fire was caused by a bird strike.

A witness told ABC New York they believed only one bird was involved.

Sofiane Zeblah said: ‘I was driving and saw something falling and then fire start on the right wing engine.

‘I believe a bird went through the engine, a big bird. I was in shock. I stopped immediately on the turnpike. Thankfully nothing happened.’

No injuries have been reported.

Air traffic was briefly suspended as a precaution, but have now resumed.

The aviation has been struck by a number of incidents over recent months, including a number in the US and Canada.

In January an American Airlines plane collided with a US Army Black Hawk outside Washington DC, killing all 67 onboard the two aircraft.

Last month, a Delta plane flipped onto its roof shortly after landing at Toronto Pearson Airport, leaving at least 18 people injured.
