PM Shehbaz Sharif Assures PPP of Amicable Resolution to Controversial Canal Issue

A meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a delegation from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has shed light on efforts to resolve the contentious issue of new canals from the Indus River.

The meeting, held during an Iftar dinner on Monday evening at the Prime Minister’s House, included key figures such as Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

PM Shehbaz Sharif assured the delegation that no new canal projects would be initiated without consulting the PPP. This move aims to address concerns raised by the party regarding unilateral decisions on water distribution, which have caused tension across provinces.

The Prime Minister announced plans for a high-level meeting to discuss the canal issue in detail, indicating a commitment to resolving the matter through dialogue.

Bilawal Bhutto also raised concerns about federal funding for Sindh’s development projects and the province’s water distribution issues. Additionally, discussions touched on power-sharing arrangements in Punjab and unmet commitments by the federal government.

The issue of new canals from the Indus River has been highly contentious, with Sindh expressing strong reservations. The PPP has been vocal about its opposition to the project, citing concerns over water scarcity and ecological impacts.

Protests across Sindh have highlighted the sensitivity of the issue, with many viewing it as a threat to the province’s water security and a potential strain on inter-provincial relations.
