Protester Detained After 16-Hour Standoff on Big Ben with Palestinian Flag

A protester was detained after a 16-hour standoff on London’s Big Ben, also known as the Elizabeth Tower, while holding a Palestinian flag.

The incident began early on Saturday morning when the man, who was barefoot and dressed in black, scaled the iconic tower.

He positioned himself on a ledge several meters above the ground, where he remained for over 16 hours, waving the Palestinian flag and chanting “Free Palestine”.

During the standoff, emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police, were deployed to the scene. Negotiators used a fire brigade ladder to communicate with the protester, who initially refused to descend, stating he would only come down on his own terms.

The situation led to significant disruptions in the area, with Westminster Bridge and nearby roads closed, and tours of the Houses of Parliament cancelled.

The protester eventually descended just after midnight on Sunday, using a cherry picker to reach the ground, where he was arrested by police.

The incident has raised concerns about security at the Parliamentary Estate, with some MPs calling for an investigation into how the protester managed to bypass security measures.

In a related incident, pro-Palestinian activists vandalized Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, protesting against his proposals regarding the Gaza Strip.
