The PSL has an array of eccentric characters; some run circles around defenders, and others love to get scrappy.
Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng hasn’t kicked a ball in the PSL since coming off the bench in early November against Richards Bay amid salary demands the club are unwilling to meet.
The sour negotiations have Saleng out of matchday squads with no return date in sight, begging the question: Will he leave in the offseason?
While one can’t characterise Saleng as a ‘bad boy’, the media, and perhaps Pirates, are certainly portraying him as one. The 27-year-old winger is demanding a pay rise on his R70,000 per week contract – the Buccaneers are yet to bite, leaving him in exile.
“It’s unfair, imagine getting R70 000 but your contribution in most of the matches speaks volumes, while somebody [else] is getting R500 000,” said Saleng’s childhood friend, Boikanyo Maine.
Cards, cards and cards
When it comes to being on the pitch, few defenders are as ruthless as Inacio Miguel and Nkosinathi Sibisi; both are topping the yellow card charts with six (Miguel) and nine (Sibisi).
PSL law states players who accumulate four yellow cards will face a one-game suspension – Sibisi, who leads the league in yellow cards, has triggered the ban twice in seventeen appearances.
Other hotheads include Sihle Nduli (8 yellows in 16 games), Edgar Manaka (6 yellows, 1 red in 18 games), and Relebogile Mokhuoane (6 yellows in 16 games).
Who do you think is the scariest player in the PSL?
