PSV’s manager and players were unsurprisingly distraught after the 7-1 mauling at the hands of Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

After knocking Juventus out in the play-off round, there was hope that PSV could spring another surprise against the Premier League giants, at least in the home leg in Eindhoven before a trip to north London.

However, they were demolished in front of their own fans and the tie is over before the match at the Emirates begins.

PSV had a great chance to open the scoring early on but Ismail Saibari struck the crossbar and things went downhill from there.

Jurrien Timber put Arsenal ahead, before Ethan Nwaneri and Mikel Merino made the scoreline look very nice for the visitors long before the half-time whistle.

Noa Lang’s penalty kept things interesting, but not for long, as Martin Odegaard scored twice, while Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori completed the remarkable romp.

Manager Peter Bosz told a press conference after the loss: ‘Painful. Was it humiliating? Yes. Was it a surprise? Yes it is a surprise, it is surprising.

‘Not winning against Arsenal is possible, they are missing four attackers, yet it is a great team and we did not play well.’

He added on Amazon Prime Sport: ‘Terrible night for us.

‘No chance. Maybe two moments in the game – our first chance after 15 minutes when we hit the bar and the second yellow [not given to Myles Lewis-Skelly] were moments to come back in the game. Football-wise we had no chance. We were not in our best form. Arsenal played fantastic, we had no chance tonight.

‘Poor from or side, absolutely. Not at all our football we play normally and Arsenal did really well.

‘We had a plan we analysed them we thought that we could hurt them somewhere but if you look at how we defended, really poor. You can not be successful if you play this way.

‘I can not imagine that I would ever lose this big so the players were disappointed. For us it’s important in a couple of days to return to championship [Eredivisie]. We will analysis this game and help the players, if you lose this big you need to help them.

‘We have to accept it but it’s hard. We have to do it quick because only 10 games to play so we need men now.’

PSV’s season looks to be in tatters after their third defeat on the spin which has seen them tumble out of the Dutch Cup, fall eight points behind league leaders Ajax and now appear to be out of the Champions League.

Captain Luuk de Jong said: ‘Arsenal was just a lot too big today. It was very bad on our part. They are a Premier League club that punishes that mercilessly.

‘When you get blow after blow after blow, it hurts. We hoped that a Juventus match would be the turning point. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to turn it around. We will have to force that turning point ourselves.’

French defender Olivier Boscagli added: ‘They were simply better than us in everything.

‘We let them play. And that’s what they want. We were constantly running after them.

‘We have to look ahead. There is still a return in London. And we have to make sure that we are ready in the competition.’

Midfielder Jerdy Schouten summed it up, saying: ‘They were just ten times better than us today. It was all wrong. We were in the wrong position. We didn’t play well as a team and individually. It was just really bad today.’
