Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage slam two Man Utd stars over calamitous Ipswich goal

Robbie Savage took aim at Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu after a total breakdown in communication between the two Manchester United stars gifted Ipswich an opening goal at Old Trafford.

It took just four minutes for Ipswich to break the deadlock and Kieran McKenna’s men – who have won three games all season in the Premier League – were given an enormous helping hand by United thanks to some calamitous defending.

Ipswich captain Sam Morsy picked up the ball deep inside the visitors’ half and played a searching pass in behind United’s January arrival Dorgu – a £25million addition from Lecce.

Dorgu, making only his third appearance for United, appeared in control of the situation, that is until Onana inexplicably began racing out of goal to gain possession.

The young Swiss defender attempted to prod the ball into Onana’s path but instead played Jaden Philogene through on goal, who made no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box.

United rallied and appeared to have wrestled the momentum back in their favour as Matthijs de Ligt gave the hosts the lead just four minutes after Morsy directed the ball into his own net.

But the Red Devils were once again their own worst enemy, with Dorgu sent off for a horrendous challenge on Omari Hutchinson before Philogene grabbed his second of the evening to make it 2-2 at the end of a breathless first half.

‘Wow. Dorgu has tracked the run and then the communication between Onana and Dorgu must be non-existent,’ former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Savage said on TNT Sports’ commentary of Ipswich’s opener.

‘Credit to Jaden Philogene, the desire… he’s onside. But I’ve got no idea why Onana is running out to that position.

‘Dorgu has got it under control, no problem at all. He shouldn’t come there, Onana!

‘I might be completely wrong but stay. The defender has got it under control so stay in your six-yard box. Credit to Philogene. What a start from Ipswich.’

The ex-Wales international added: ‘The defender has got it under control. I don’t think there is a reason why Onana comes out there.

‘You should be talking, lay it back to him on his right foot and then he can clear it.

‘I don’t know why he’s come. The defender is in control… Onana, stay in your goal.’

Rio Ferdinand felt similarly to TNT Sports colleague over Ipswich’s opener, criticising both Onana and Dorgu for the roles they played in the goal.

‘A terrible start. I don’t think Dorgu, at any moment, looks up to sees where Onana is,’ the legendary ex-United and England centre-back said.

‘Onana doesn’t need to come in. The full-back is in complete control and he can just hold his ground and let him play it back to him.

But Dorgu doesn’t look, the awareness isn’t there and it’s pounced on. Ipswich took a deserved lead for pouncing on that lack of communication.’
