Several People Feared Dead After Bandama Dam Collapsed in Chipinge

Several people are feared to be dead after the collapse of the Bandama bridge in Chipinge on Sunday.

While the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, Chipinge Ward 10 Councillor Pearson Sithole confirmed to state media that three bodies have been recovered so far. Tragically, three children are still missing, adding to the heartbreak of the community.

Human and Animal Casualties

The disaster has not only claimed human lives but also swept away livestock, though the full extent of animal losses is yet to be determined. John Misi, the Acting Director for Local Government Services in Manicaland, provided further details on the human toll.

Among the deceased are a 30-year-old man, whose body was found buried in mud near the dam wall, and a 4-year-old girl, whose remains were discovered further downstream.

In a glimmer of hope, a 7-year-old girl swept away by the floodwaters was miraculously rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment. Additionally, a 13-year-old girl, stranded due to the dam collapse, was successfully rescued by local community members.

Historical Context: A Pattern of Disasters

This tragedy is reminiscent of past disasters that have struck Zimbabwe. In 2019, Cyclone Idai caused catastrophic flooding, exacerbated by dam failures, leading to massive displacement and loss of life in Chimanimani and Chipinge. Earlier this year, concerns were raised about the structural integrity of several small- and medium-sized dams nationwide, with engineers calling for urgent rehabilitation work.

Despite these alarming signs, progress has been slow. Residents and local leaders have consistently urged the government to prioritize dam safety measures, including regular inspections, reinforcement of dam walls, and the development of comprehensive emergency response plans. However, funding constraints and bureaucratic inefficiencies have hindered these efforts, leaving vulnerable communities at constant risk.
