The Sindh Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution opposing the construction of six new canals from the Indus River, citing concerns over water shortages and potential agricultural damage.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Sindh government to protect the province’s water rights and ensure fair distribution of water resources.
The resolution emphasizes that any such projects must be approved by the Sindh government as per the 1991 Indus River Water Apportionment Accord. It highlights the impact of these canals on Sindh’s water supply, agriculture, and wildlife, warning that they could exacerbate existing water shortages.
“This house demands an immediate halt to any plans, activities, or work related to the construction of the Cholistan Canal and other canals on the Indus River System until comprehensive discussions, consultations and agreements are held with all provincial governments, particularly Sindh, to ensure that the water rights of Sindh are fully protected and respected,” read the resolution.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has urged the federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to consult with Sindh before proceeding with any canal projects. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to adhere to the water accord and ensure fair distribution of water, stressing that Sindh will not accept any project that reduces water availability.
The opposition to these canal projects is part of a long-standing stance by the Sindh government to protect its water rights. The PPP has historically opposed projects that threaten Sindh’s water interests, such as the Kalabagh Dam. Ongoing protests across Sindh against these canal projects reflect widespread concern among farmers and residents about the potential impact on agriculture and national unity.
The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has also demanded the cancellation of these projects due to concerns over water scarcity and its implications for the province’s economy.
The resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly underscores the province’s determination to safeguard its constitutional rights and maintain fair access to water resources.
