South Africa commenced their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in National Bank Stadium, Karachi on Friday.
Batting first, South Africa set a formidable target of 316 runs, finishing their innings at 315 for 6 in 50 overs. Ryan Rickelton starred for the Proteas, scoring a remarkable 100 runs, while Aiden Markram contributed significantly with an unbeaten 52 runs.
In response, Afghanistan struggled to keep pace with the required run rate and was bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs. Rahmat Shah was the standout performer for Afghanistan, scoring a valiant 90 runs. However, the rest of the batting lineup faltered against South Africa’s bowling attack, which effectively contained their scoring opportunities.
This match marks Afghanistan’s debut in the Champions Trophy, and despite their recent successes in ODI formats, they could not overcome the experience and skill of the South African side.
The victory also helped South Africa shed some of the pressure associated with their historical performance in ICC tournaments.
