Rassie Erasmus has hinted at the next men in line to take over the Springboks captaincy in the future.
Siya Kolisi has successfully lead the Springboks to back-to-back (Bok-to-Bok) Rugby World Cup trophies.
Furthermore, he Bok skipper helped lead the Boks to the 2024 Rugby Championship as well as the Nelson Mandela Plate. He also captained the Springboks to a famous 2021 British & Irish Lions series trophy too. However, his time as Bok skipper will also come to an end.
Let’s take a look at the favourites to take over the Bok captaincy from Kolisi.

RASSIE BACKS SIYA KOLISI FOR 2027 RUGBY WORLD CUP
Rassie Erasmus is happy to back Kolisi as the Springbok captain for the 2025 season. Furthermore, he has given Kolisi his full support based on his current form. In fact, Rassie wants Kolisi to captain the Springboks in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
“Our feeling is if a guy is 34, 35, 36, injury free and the fittest and in the best shape, then he will remain the number in his position and stay captain,” Erasmus told the SA Rugby media.
Meaning, Siya is the favourite to lead the Boks out if he is fit and continues to play how he has been for the Sharks and Springboks.
FUTURE SPRINGBOK CAPTAIN CANDIDATES
Meanwhile, Rassie has pinpointed the leaders in the current Springboks squad.
“Obviously there are some other options. Eben (Etzebeth), Bongi (Mbonambi) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have been captains. But if Siya is fit, healthy and playing well, then I don’t think there will be a change this year,” Rassie stated.
Therefore, these are the men next in line to take over from Kolisi. So, if Kolisi is injured or unavailable one of these men will lead the Springboks out.
We have seen all of these players lead the Springboks out in big test matches in recent seasons. So, the Bok captaincy is in great hands with Rassie believing in the strength of a system over an individual. Furthermore, he has build leadership depth in tandem with squad depth over the past few years.
