Themba Zwane-Mamelodi Sundowns future revealed!

After months of speculation, Mamelodi Sundowns are set to offer club icon Themba Zwane a contract extension, derailing Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of signing the 35-year-old.

Rumours of an exit were mounting, but for no longer – Miguel Cardoso is adamant about prolonging Mshishi’s fifteen-year spell at the Brazilians.

“The new deal is as good as done and the coach has played an important part in that,” a Siya source confirmed.

“As a way of honouring him, the club has given him a one-year contract offer plus a one-year option as they want him to be part of the FIFA Club World Cup in June and that’s when his contract was supposed to expire,” they added.

“They believe it’s a good move as he has dedicated his life to the club for a long time and the new deal is more of a reward for his dedication and commitment to the club.”

No Zwane for Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs are renowned for picking up out-of-contract Brazilians, the most recent being Gaston Sirino.

With Zwane’s contract expiring in June and no contract talks to speak of since his Achille’s injury last October, there where whispers of a potential exit with AmaKhosi being the likely suitors. Not anymore.

“Kaizer Chiefs could be watching the situation of a Mamelodi Sundowns star with an interested eye,” KickOff reported.

“This as has been the Soweto giants’ tradition with out-of-contract players at Chloorkop in recent years. Even though Chiefs appeared not to have planned it, it came as no surprise when they signed Gaston Sirino. This after his contract lapsed at Sundowns at the end of June 2024.

“Amakhosi may also not be able to resist the temptation of having the opportunity to sign Themba Zwane, whose contract is left with only five months. With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos still rating the 35-year-old, it would not be a shock for Chiefs to lure the Tembisa-born man to Naturena.

“He would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Josta Dladla, Katlego Mphela, Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and recently Sirino, who all joined Chiefs from Sundowns as free agents.”
