Thomson man sentenced to life, +5 years in 2020 killing of Ahmad Popal

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Terrence Wayne Cumber, 29, was convicted by a Richmond County jury on Friday in the June 2020 killing of Ahmad Popal in downtown Augusta, District Attorney Jared Williams announced.

Cumber was sentenced Life in Prison plus five years.

The case surrounding Popal’s murder, who was 23, sparked protest after a judge at the time set the Cumber’s bond at $4,000. He was then released on a signature bond.

Cumber was arrested on June 21, 2020 after fatally shooting Popal outside The Scene Nightclub on Broad Street in Augusta. He was given murder and weapons possession charges in the case.

“Guns and alcohol do not mix,” District Attorney Jared Williams said in a statement on April 4, 2025. “On the eve of Masters week, do not let a night of celebration turn into Life in a cell.”
