TV viewers are ecstatic after it was revealed this week that a popular 2010s police detective drama is set to be revived on American TV.

It’s been announced that Blue Bloods will be continuing after all, following its recent cancellation – but not in the way that long-time fans had been expecting.

Instead of carrying on with a 15th season of Blue Bloods, however, a new series titled Boston Blue will stick with the story of Donnie Wahlberg’s character Danny Reagan.

Blue Bloods starred Wahlberg alongside Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Len Cariou and ran for 14 seasons between 2010 and 2024.

The show was unexpectedly cancelled despite protests from the show’s cast, and ratings remaining healthy after more than a decade on the air.

News of Blue Bloods’s ending left fans devastated, but its resurrection under the name Boston Blue has delighted them once again—even if some original cast members are missing.

On Facebook, Amy Elliott said: ‘So glad to hear about this, my late Dad who lived to be 92 years old, loved watching Blue Bloods, it was his favorite show to watch.’

‘Oh my gosh! I am so beyond excited about this. The show is going to be called Boston Blue with Danny being the main star, and I’m hoping that they put it on Friday nights. Thank you Donnie!,’ commented Katherine Lamb on the social platform.

CBS cancelled Blue Bloods in 2024 but the network will be continuing to broadcast the story via Boston Blue once the first season is ready, likely to be later this year or in early 2026.

According to reports in Deadline, the series had been in development for some time, but under different names and with some of the details changed, as CBS searched for a Blue Bloods spin-off.

Fans have worked out that the new show’s title namechecking the east coast city of Boston means that Donnie will be heading back to his home city in Massachusetts to film the series.

‘Yay! He is going back to Boston,’ Cindy Gunnerson remarked, adding that ‘Donnie was briefly on [TV series] Rizzoli & Isles in Boston before Blue Bloods.’

@TerrakaCouture on X called Blue Bloods one of the ‘best shows ever made in New York,’ with the series primarily filmed on location in the famous state and city.

However, some fans expressed disappointment that the new show was being made in place of Blue Bloods, which they hoped would be kept on the air.

Linda Schooley said on Facebook: ‘Great to hear, but I am confused. Will miss the rest of the Blue Blood cast, unless some of them will appear with Donnie in the new show.’

Alivia Key echoed Linda’s thoughts: ‘This is great, but why couldn’t they just keep Blue Bloods going? The show was still thriving and we love all the characters!’

During its time on air, the show began with an average of 12.58 million viewers tuning in each week, eventually growing its audience to 14.07 million by season seven in 2016.

However, in the age of streaming dominance, viewing figures fell to 9.4 million – which is still a healthy number, but marked a steady decline from eight years before.
