To raise the money, fundraisers from the school took part in a marathon-distance walk (42kms) through the Peak District in central England.
Around 40 staff members, students, and families from St. Dominic’s Grammar School in Brewood participated in the ‘Mighty Hike’ event.
In the process they surpassed their fundraising goal for the Ubunye Foundation.
Who is the charity?
Ubunye is a Non-Profit Organisation established in 2002 and led by rural communities in the Ngqushwa and Sarah Baartman Municipalities in the Eastern Cape.
It provides educational support to the underprivileged and fosters sustainable development through community-led initiatives.
St. Dominic’s headmaster Peter McNabb praised the school’s efforts.
“We take part in a charity challenge every year because it is important to give something back and support others,” he said.
“I am incredibly proud of everyone who participated, it was a real community effort. Everyone rose to the challenge and showed wonderful team spirit.”
The hike took place on Saturday, 29 March, starting from Bakewell.

‘Scientifically proven’: Education minister defends foldable desks
In related news, South Africa’s Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube has responded to the controversy surrounding the recent rollout of foldable desks in impoverished areas.
The Department of Basic Education provided underprivileged pupils in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape with foldable, portable desks.
The campaign was developed by MiDesks Global and received sponsorships from Old Mutual and McDonald’s. The companies’ logos were printed on the desks.
According to the NGO, the ‘wheelie schoolbag’, made of hard plastic, converts into a desk and a chair with a solar light and a USB charging portal.
The bag’s wheels reportedly allow schoolkids to pull the desks over any terrain. However, they have been introduced in rural areas where learners have to walk long distances to school.
