Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his willingness to resign if it would lead to peace in Ukraine, specifically in exchange for Ukraine’s membership in the NATO military alliance.
“If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready,” Zelensky told a Kyiv news conference. “I can exchange it for NATO.”
This statement comes amid heightened tensions and criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has labelled Zelensky a “dictator” and falsely claimed that Zelensky’s approval ratings are low.
Zelensky has emphasized that he is not offended by these comments and is ready to test his popularity in elections once martial law ends in Ukraine.
Zelensky said he was not “offended” by Trump’s comments and was ready to test his popularity in elections once martial law ends in Ukraine.
“I very much want from Trump an understanding of each other,” he told journalists, adding that “security guarantees” from the US president were “much needed”.
Zelensky’s offer is part of his broader push for NATO membership as a condition for ending the war with Russia. However, NATO has been cautious about committing to membership for Ukraine.
The situation is further complicated by recent high-level talks between U.S. and Russian officials, which have raised concerns among Ukrainian and European leaders.
