Wasim Akram Slams Pakistan’s Death Bowling After Crushing Loss to New Zealand in Champions Trophy Opener

Wasim Akram has sharply criticized Pakistan’s bowling performance in the death overs following their disappointing 60-run defeat to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

The match saw Pakistan concede a staggering 113 runs in the final ten overs, allowing New Zealand to set a formidable target of 320 runs for the loss of five wickets.

The former Pakistan skipper  highlighted the team’s inability to secure wickets during the middle overs as a critical factor contributing to their struggles in the latter stages of the game. With no breakthroughs during this phase, New Zealand’s batters, particularly Tom Latham (who scored an unbeaten 118) and Glenn Phillips (61 runs), capitalized on Pakistan’s inconsistent bowling.

Haris Rauf emerged as the most expensive bowler, surrendering 83 runs in his ten overs while taking two wickets, while Shaheen Afridi went wicketless, conceding 68 runs.

In a pointed critique, Akram noted that Pakistan’s recent bowling averages in ODIs are concerning, with Rauf averaging 35.33, Afridi 44.50, Naseem Shah 49.00, and Abrar Ahmed at a staggering 54.00.

He remarked, “Pakistan cannot win ODIs with these averages,” emphasizing the urgent need for improvement.

Akram’s concerns extended beyond individual performances to the overall quality of Pakistan’s cricketing structure.

He was joined by former captain Waqar Younis in criticizing the domestic cricket setup, which they believe has failed to produce consistent talent despite significant changes over the past five years. Younis urged for a focus on nurturing young talent rather than dwelling on past failures, stating, “Looking back is not the answer—looking ahead is.”

As Pakistan prepares for their next challenge against India on Sunday, they face mounting pressure to rectify their bowling deficiencies and regain form in this crucial tournament.
